Drinking Water Color Issues

The City of Caseville is working to resolve numerous concerns from residents regarding the discoloration of the city’s drinking water. The purpose of this communication is to make you aware that all testing continues to show the water meets all health standards and that we have and continue to, take steps to both ensure continued high-quality drinking water and to address the discoloration issue. The City of Caseville also supplies water to parts of Caseville Township and the Village of Pigeon.

Can You Drink the Water?

The city routinely tests the drinking water for all regulated contaminants. Ongoing monitoring and testing of Caseville’s drinking water shows it compiles with stringent standards of the Safe Drinking Water Act. In addition, our water filtration plant is operating in accordance with the required treatment techniques. Based on our testing results and consultation with the State of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), residents may continue normal water consumption and use. If water testing ever shows the water does not meet health standards, you will be notified immediately. While we are confident the water meets standards, we realize the discoloration is both aesthetically objectionable, you may use bottled water as we work towards solutions. Residents interested in reviewing our water samples may request a copy of our State of Michigan monthly operation reports and/or lab results.

What are We Doing?

Possible sources of the color are naturally occurring organics in Lake Huron and accumulated sediments in the water mains. The source of the color problems is being investigated and we are actively evaluating options to address the water’s aesthetics. Steps the city has taken include a recent dive inspection of the drinking water intake, flushing the water distribution system, and discussing with the city’s consulting engineers and Michigan EGLE.
