August Newsletter 2020

Dear Residents,

What a year 2020 has been. We hope our residents are doing well and following the COVID guidelines. As a Village, we continue to follow the State guidelines and ask residents to be prudent in wearing a mask in public and in our local businesses.

In the middle of this Pandemic, Pigeon was hit the hardest in early June, with a vicious storm. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as trees and power lines fell in and around our Village. Our DPW Staff with the help of local communities including Elkton, Caseville, and Owendale DPW departments, did a tremendous job and our town was cleaned up in 2 days. We also had help from the Sheriff’s department work crew, Esch Landscaping, JP's Tree Service, Superior Tree Service, and many community volunteers. We are grateful to have such support at a time of need, and we thank all of those entities and any that I missed, that helped in any way.

Nichol & Son are back in town right now to complete our East Michigan & South Frank Street projects. We hope for completion of the project sometime in August.

The Village Council would like to thank Huron Castings, Blue Diamond, and Axis Machining, for their monetary contribution to help fund a pump station rebuild at our Hartley and North Main Street pumps. We are fortunate to have companies that care about and reinvest in our community.

Work is underway in our tennis courts to replace poles and basketball backboards and rims on our 3 basketball courts. Funding came from annual donations from Apple Blossom Wind. We are also in the process of locating 3 "Pickleball" Courts in the unused southwest corner of the tennis courts. Completion of these projects will be in the next couple of weeks. The Village received a grant to purchase the Pickleball Court equipment from the I69 Corridor Group.

The Village Council recently voted to rename a couple of streets in the Village to honor significant contributors to our community. School Street has been renamed "Dwight Gascho Drive" in honor of longtime Scheurer Hospital Administrator Dwight Gascho, who was instrumental in bringing both Country Bay Village and Country Gardens to our community and leading the unprecedented growth of the hospital. The Council also voted to rename Sanford Street from the (E. Mich.) Post Office south to the railroad tracks to Eichler Street in honor of the Eichler family, who's countless contributions to our community, Pigeon Telephone, Thumb Cellular, Agri Valley Communications, Main Street Café, Har-Jo's Ben Franklin, to name a few. We thank these community members who have helped to make Pigeon a better place, and a thriving small town in the Thumb.

Have a great rest of your summer!

Sincerely,
Michael LePage
Village President
